Pequot recognition decisions awaited

FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2002

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has projected it will finalize recognition decisions on two Pequot tribes by June 25.

But don't hold your breath. The Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe, like others, have been subject to numerous delays.

In the meantime, they express hope on the future that recognition will bring. Federal funding, health programs, housing assistance, educational grants and economic development are tops on the minds of tribal leaders.
