Tribal stories confirm historic events

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2002

Stories among tribes in the Pacific Northwest are being used to confirm catastrophic events such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

Stories from the Makah, Hoh, Quilete, Yurok and other tribes describe events that have been correlated to acts of destruction. A common theme relates a battle between a thunderbird and a whale.

Ruth Ludwin, a University of Washington earthquake scientist, is compiling tribal knowledge to help gain a better understanding of the historic disasters.
