Oklahoma finally gets its Indian

MONDAY, JUNE 10, 2002 The state of Oklahoma hoisted "The Guardian" atop its capitol on Friday, the last state in the Union to complete its dome work but the first to feature a Native American. Designed by state lawmaker Enoch Kelley Haney, a member of the Seminole Nation, the 22-foot bronze statue isn't meant to symbolize a particular tribe or person. Haney's work was chosen unanimously by a blind committee and he refused the $50,000 commission. Get the Story:
