The state of Oklahoma hoisted "The Guardian" atop its capitol on Friday, the last state in the Union to complete its dome work but the first to feature a Native American.

Designed by state lawmaker Enoch Kelley Haney, a member of the Seminole Nation, the 22-foot bronze statue isn't meant to symbolize a particular tribe or person. Haney's work was chosen unanimously by a blind committee and he refused the $50,000 commission.
