A Senate committee overruled the state of Nevada and voted to store up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear nuclear waste on traditional Shoshone land.

By a vote of 13-10, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved the Yucca Mountain project. The action sends the proposal to the Senate floor where adamant opponents believe it can't be stopped.

The approval is a win for the Bush administration, which has supported the project. It also could be a major financial boon for companies formerly headed by Bush appointee at the Department of Energy.

The Office of Government Ethics, however, has said Undersecretary Robert G. Card has violated no rules because he has no financial interest in Kaiser-Hill Company and CH2M Hill Inc.

The administration still faces challenges on its environmental policies, with Democrats introducing a bill to restore a plan that bans new road construction and logging on 59 million acres of national forest land and another to restore a corporate tax fund that helps clean up Superfund sites.
