Alaska Natives vow whaling fight

THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2002 Alaska Natives vow to continue their age-old whaling hunting tradition despite a rebuff by the International Whaling Commission. The IWC voted not to extend a quota for Native bowhead whale hunts in Alaska. The decision also applied to indigenous hunts in Siberia, Russia. The IWC is being asked to reconsider its vote for the third time. Gov. Tony Knowles (D) wants Secretary of State Colin Powell to intervene. Get the Story:
