Two Montana tribes want the National Park Service to change the date of the dedication of a long-overdue memorial to the tribal warriors that fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

The dedication has been planned for November 11. The Park Service says the date is appropriate because it is Veterans Day.

But the Northern Cheyenne tribal council and Fort Peck tribal board want the date moved to the actual anniversary of the battle, June 25. Some tribal members who fought to get the memorial built even after Congress authorized it also want the ceremony changed.

"We waited 30 years for this to happen and we can wait another year," Chauncey F. Whitright III told The Billings Gazette.
