Calif. mascot ban to be reconsidered

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2002 A bill to ban certain Indian mascots at public schools will be reconsidered next January by the California Assembly. The legislation was defeated this week after changes were made to appease critics. Instead of banning all ethnic mascots, it applied only to "Redskins, Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Apaches, Comanches or any other American Indian tribal name." Sponsor Jackie Goldberg, a Democrat from Los Angeles, plans to amend the bill further to exempt schools near reservations if they work with local tribes. The bill already exempted schools on reservations. Get the Story:
