Md. schools reject mascot request

TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2002 A school district has rejected a request to drop two Indian-themed mascots. The Washington County superintendent said Richard Regan has no standing to challenge the "Warriors" and "Indians" of the schools. Regan, who is Lumbee, sits on the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs, said the mascots were offensive to Native Americans. The Boonsboro High School Warriors features the likeness of a Plains Indian man in a headdress. The school also has a totem pole outside its front door. Get the Story:
