FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2002

Federal statistics released on Thursday show a decline in teen smoking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28.5 percent of high-school students reported current tobacco use. This is down from 36.4 percent five years ago.

Native youth are the heaviest smokers in their age group, according to federal data. Yesterday's report, however, only looked at smoking among white, African-American and Hispanic youth.
