Vote set on Seneca gaming compact

MONDAY, MAY 13, 2002

Members of the Seneca Nation of New York will be going to the polls tomorrow to vote on a casino gaming compact.

The compact would enable the tribe to open as many as three casinos, including two located off-reservation. Tribal leaders believe the deal is worth $1 billion over 14 years.

The financial aspects are enticing to some tribal members. The unemployment rate on tribal land hovers around 50 percent.

Others believe the deal will benefit a small minority of the tribe. Some, including tribal treasurer Arnold N. Cooper, also think the deal impacts tribal sovereignty.

The Oneida Nation has been operating a casino for nine years, which Seneca proponents point to as a success. Others say the gaming has divided the Oneida tribe and the same will occur for the Seneca.
