Having exhausted its administrative appeals, the Duwamish Tribe of Washington is considering a lawsuit to gain federal recognition.

A Clinton administration official signed a final determination against acknowledgment in January 2001. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb reversed the decision in late September.

The tribe requested a reconsideration but Secretary of Interior Gale Norton refused. This makes McCaleb's action final.

Besides a lawsuit, the tribe could obtain recognition from Congress.
