President Bush and Republicans attacked Democrats on Thursday for not confirming appointees to the federal bench fast enough.

Democrats responded that they were approving Bush's nominees at a faster rate than was given to President Bill Clinton. But they are also slowing down nominees they see as too conservative and have not held hearings for them.

Included is John G. Roberts Jr., named to the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals a year ago. He fought Alaska Native sovereignty in the Venetie case and defended the state of Hawaii's Native Hawaiian programs in Rice v. Cayetano.
