Housing approved near Nez Perce cemetery
Friday, February 13, 2004

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho plans to appeal a decision allowing the development of upscale homes near a tribal gravesite.

Commissioners in Wallowa County, Oregon, approved the construction of 11 homes on 62 acres near the grave of Old Chief Joseph. The site is also the start of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail.

The Nez Perce, Umatilla and Colville tribes oppose the development. The company will be required to conduct another archeological survey before proceeding.
