Native leaders in Canada are criticizing the Quebec government's interference in a dispute on the Kanesatake Mohawk Reservation.

Tribal leaders were equally critical of the "thugs" who burned down Chief James Gabriel's home. But they said Quebec's actions undermined tribal sovereignty and set a bad precedent nationwide.

Gabriel became the target of protests because of his tough-on-crime stance. He fired a police chief he claimed wasn't making arrests and brought in a Native police force. Quebec's public safety minister negotiated an agreement that reinstated the chief and removed the new police force.
