Bill would return 63,000 acres to terminated tribes
Tuesday, December 16, 2003

Support is growing for a bill that would return 63,000 acres of national forest land to the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians of Oregon.

The tribes were terminated in 1954 and lost their reservation. Congress restored tribal status in 1984 but hasn't restored the land.

The bill would return 63,000 acres of the Siuslaw National Forest to the tribes. Environmental groups are supporting provisions that would protect the land by prohibiting land transfers, protecting old trees and implementing timer management standards.

The bill, S.868, was introduced by Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.)
