Dozens of tribes challenging 2000 Census numbers

More than 100 tribes have challenged their assessments from the 2000 U.S. Census. As of November 1, 78 completed recounts and 39 won challenges to the numbers. The Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act authorizes the recounts. Tribes say they are necessary because the Census Bureau undercounts the number of Indians. By the Census' own admission, at least 150,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives were missed in 2000. Indian Country has the highest undercount rate, next to Native Hawaiians. Get the Story:
