Conn. officials want action on federal recognition
Tuesday, December 2, 2003

Leaders of 30 towns and cities in Connecticut sent a letter to their Congressional delegation seeking action on the way the Bureau of Indian Affairs recognizes tribes, The Hartford Courant reported.

Sens. Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, both Democrats, tried to impose a moratorium on federal recognition but were defeated on the Senate floor. They say the BIA process is flawed.

Connecticut officials are opposing the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, whose status is on appeal. The BIA recently denied recognition to the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation in a preliminary decision that is still being reviewed.
