Non-Indians on reservations flex political clout
Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Some call them anti-Indian and racist, but non-Indian groups on reservations are exercising their political clout.

In Washington, a group on the Tulalip Reservation has formed to oppose the tribe's proposed shoreline regulations. There are similar organizations on the Lummi and Quinault reservations, and near the Colville and Yakama reservations.

The Tulalip Community Association is lobbying against the tribal homeland security bill, which opponents say will give tribes too much authority over non-Indians. The association is working against state Rep. John McCoy, a Tulalip tribal member who is running for the state Senate.
