Snohomish Tribe waits for answer on recognition
Wednesday, November 26, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is set to decide whether the Snohomish Tribe of Washington should be granted federal recognition, The Seattle Times reports.

The tribe has been waiting for an answer on its status since 1975. But it faces opposition from the Tulalip Tribes, which has submitted evidence to counter the Snohomish petition. Tulalip Vice Chairman Stanley Jones, who is a Snohomish descendant, says the Snohomish are not a separate tribe.

An anthropologist and genealogist from the Office of Federal Acknowledgment visited the tribe's offices two months ago to check records and conduct interviews, The Times reported.
