Harvard University's Project on American Indian Economic Development has recognized 16 tribal government programs.

The programs were chosen for their innovation and effectiveness. More than 110 tribes applied.

Of the 16 winners, eight received "high honors" and a $10,000 check. Those awards went to:

The Tulalip Tribe's Quil Ceda Village, the first federal Indian municipality, located in Washington state.
The Navajo Nation's behavioral corrections project.
The Chickasaw Nation's home loan program in Oklahoma.
The Kake, Alaska, village's juvenile peacemaking circle program.
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians' family violence and domestic services program.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai trust resources and management program in Montana. The Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians joint agency to manage Wisconsin's third-largest lake.
The Menominee Indian Community of Wisconsin's Community Center of Chicago to serve tribal members in the urban city.

The awards were presented at a ceremony last Tuesday at the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
