Calif. university proposes new warrior mascot
Tuesday, November 18, 2003

San Diego State University showed off its new mascot on Monday, according to The San Diego Star Tribune. The new mascot replaces the previous mascot, Monty Montezuma, that was eliminated in 2001 after Latino and Native American students complained.

The new mascot was developed after talks with many interested parties at the school including students, alumni and cultural experts. A university spokesman stated that the process "address[es] the concerns of as many parties as possible to balance historical accuracy with the public desire to have a mascot back on the field."

The paper talks to the president of a Chicano Student society who says that the warrior seems little different from Monty Montezuma. She goes on to say "her group is completely opposed to human representation in any form."

Students will get to vote on the mascot from Dec 3-5.
