Indian gaming bill held up due to Senate dispute
Friday, November 14, 2003

A bill to amend the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) was held up on Thursday over partisan squabbling in the Senate.

Republicans launched a 30-hour debate on judicial nominees late Wednesday. In response, Democrats objected to all committee business.

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs was taking up four bills, including IGRA amendments that seek to provide more guidance on revenue-sharing, Class II gaming, casino standards, the budget for the National Indian Gaming Commission and other issues. It is unlikely the bill, as introduced by Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), will pass in its current form but the non-controversial parts will probably make it into other legislation.

Another bill held up in committee was the American Indian Probate Reform Act and a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that the Cobell lawsuit should be settled out of court.
