Nickel to commemorate Lewis and Clark expedition
Friday, November 7, 2003

The U.S. Mint will commemorate the bicentennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition with two new designs for the tails side of the nickel.

In the fall of 2004, the back the 5-cent piece will feature a rendition of the Indian Peace Medal that Lewis and Clark gave to tribal chiefs on their journey to the West. The design shows a hand representing the U.S. clasping a hand representing the Indian nations.
