High uranium levels found near Nev. reservations
Wednesday, October 29, 2003

Uranium levels at an abandoned mine in Nevada are up to 40 times higher than legal limits, the Associated Press reported.

The AP obtained documents about water tests performed at the old open pit copper mine, 55 miles southeast of Reno. The Yerington Paiute Tribe and Walker Lake Paiute Tribe live near the site and their groundwater could be contaminated.

The tribes and other groups will meet with the Environmental Protection Agency next Tuesday to discuss cleanup of the site, the AP said.
