Ousted Ute officials decry lack of BIA oversight

A lawsuit filed by members of the Northern Ute Tribe accuses the Bureau of Indian Affairs of shirking its trust responsibilities and a conflict of interest. Luke Duncan and Ron Wopsock, former business committee members, filed the suit last month. They say the BIA has allowed John Jurrius, the tribe's financial advisor, to ruin the tribe. Local BIA superintendent Chet Mills is married to Jurrius's financial partner, they add. Duncan and Wopsock were removed from the business committee for "gross misconduct."
