Actor Val Kilmer claims Cherokee ancestry
Tuesday, October 14, 2003

Actor Val Kilmer has taken out a newspaper ad to respond to a Rolling Stone article in which he criticized New Mexico, where he resides.

In the ad, Kilmer said he is "part Native American and would never conceive of slandering a human in any way because of the color of their skin," according to the Associated Press. Kilmer said his grandmother was Cherokee but there is no word whether she was a princess.

Kilmer placed the ad in The Santa Fe New Mexican.

Rolling Stone said it stands by its article, which quoted Kilmer as saying "80 percent of the people in my county are drunk." Kilmer lives in northern New Mexico.
