N.D. to install statue of Sakakawea in D.C.
Tuesday, October 14, 2003
The state of North Dakota will dedicate a statue to Sakakawea, the Indian woman on the Lewis and Clark expedition, in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. The state will be installed at the National Statuary Hall. Sakakawea, who lived among the Hidatsa tribe in North Dakota, is the state's second representative and first Native woman in the hall. The 2 p.m. ceremony at the U.S. Capitol will be preceded by a horseback parade led by Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation chairman Tex Hall. The tribe has taken an active role in the bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark journey.
