House panel hears from self-governance tribes
Friday, October 10, 2003

The House Resources Committee held an oversight hearing on self-governance on Wednesday.

Representatives of four tribes testified on the need to expand self-governance options. They said tribes should be able to compact programs at all relevant federal agencies not just the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Indian Health Service (IHS).

The tribal representatives also said the reorganization of BIA and consolidation at IHS will negatively impact self-governance tribes.
