Book Review: Winners and losers at tribal casino
Monday, October 6, 2003

"As we have seen recently here in Rhode Island, tensions can erupt at any time when the moneymaking ambitions of Native Americans, regulated by the federal government, clash with the laws of the state in which they live.

In this ninth book [Killing Raven] of her contemporary mystery series set in Wyoming and environs, Margaret Coel creates an elaborately clever plot that deals with a Native American casino.

The owners and managers have shelled out $18 million to build the Great Plains Casino for the Arapaho tribe on the Wind River Reservation. Capt. Jack Monroe and his would-be Nazi storm troopers are opposed to gambling in any form and will do anything to ensure the casino's failure. Ordinary people are caught up in the frenzy of slot machines and loan sharks, doomed to tortuous financial traps that often lead to murder."
