House panel approves Native land exchange bill
Thursday, October 2, 2003

The House Resources Committee on Wednesday approved a bill to swap 12,000 acres of land between the federal government and two Alaska Native corporations.

If passed by Congress, the Sealaska and Cape Fox corporations would select 12,000 acres of forest land. They would give up forestland and mineral rights elsewhere.

Some environmentalists are opposing the bill because of mining that is slated for the area. The say the land the federal government is giving up is not worth as much as the Native-owned land.
