NPS considers designation for Navajo Long Walk

The National Park Service is taking public comment on the possibility of designating the Navajo Long Walk a national historic trail. In 1863, the U.S. Army forced 8,000 Navajos to walk 300 miles to an Army post in New Mexico. In 1868, after the signing of a treaty, they were forced to walk back to eastern Arizona. In 1863, 400 Mescalero Apaches were also forced to walk to an Army post. Most of them escaped. The national trail would cover routes the Navajos and Apaches walked. Public meetings will be held on the Navajo and Apache reservations. Get the Story:
