Minn. tribe asserts authority over air quality
Monday, September 22, 2003

The Fond du Lac Ojibwe Tribe of Minnesota has asked for treatment as state (TAS) status from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The tribe wants to be able to regulate air quality affecting the reservation. This would affect off-reservation polluters.

If successful, the tribe would be the first in the Midwest to obtain TAS status. Several states have opposed tribal authority under the EPA program, but the courts have consistently upheld it.
