Secret witness tip leads to return of petroglyphs
Wednesday, September 17, 2003
A secret witness tip to the police department in Reno, Nevada, led to the recovery of three stolen petroglyphs, including one one authorities didn't realize had been stolen. The 800-year-old petroglyphs were taken from Peavine Peak in northern Nevada. Authorities are considering laying federal charges against those involved. The U.S. Forest Service, Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and the Nevada Rock Art Foundation offered a $4,000 reward for information leading to recovery of the petroglyphs and the arrest of those responsible for the theft.
