EPA weighs Superfund status for Columbia River

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering adding the upper levels of the Columbia River in Washington to the national Superfund list of toxic sites. EPA wants Teck Cominco, a mining company, to pay for tons of mine waste into the river. The company admits it dumped 400 tons of slag a day into the river. Officials from both sides are meeting to discuss how to proceed. The river runs through the Colville Reservation. The tribal manger says delays to the cleanup could be costly to the reservation, which has already suffered from dams that limit salmon runs. Get the Story:
