N.M. agency suspends tribal elder care contract
Monday, September 1, 2003

The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Care Department has suspended a $159,000 annual contract with the Eight Northern Pueblos Council (ENIPC) over concerns that basic services to the elderly aren't being met.

The department is giving ENIPC, a non-profit, a chance to prove it can handle the program. According to news accounts, ENIPC has been having trouble delivering food and supplies to elders. Two of five senior citizens' centers located on reservations have been temporarily closed but the state will now contract with tribes directly.

According to The Rio Grande Sun, recent audits show that ENIPC is short on reserve funds and has not managed federal monies properly.
