Native candidate in Calif. recall runs on gas money
Friday, August 15, 2003

David Laughing Horse Robinson, chairman of the Kawaiisu Tribe, is running his campaign for governor of California on gas money, traveling up and down the state on weekends.

"I've got my tent and my pickup," he tells USA Today.

Robinson is a technician in the art department at California State University-Bakersfield. He says universities should be free and could be paid for with a flat tax on everyone's income.

The Kawaiisu Tribe of the Tejon Rancheria was terminated in 1958. Its status has not been restored.
