Southern Ute tribal member charged with murder

Carlos Herrera, a member of the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, has been charged with the murder of a fellow tribal member.

Herrera, 30, is accused of beating to death Brenda Chavez, 40, whose body was found in May 2001. According to news accounts, the two had a romantic relationship and Herrera confessed to the crime.

Herrera turned himself in to federal agents on Sunday, The Durango Herald reported.
