Mohegan Tribe asks BIA to take land into trust
Wednesday, May 19, 2004

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take 75 acres into trust.

The land, divided into 15 parcels, is located in the town of Montville. Two-thirds, or about 50 acres, is assessed at $268,000, more than a quarter of the town's annual tax revenue. The tribe's chairman said the parcels are contiguous or near to the existing reservation.

The tribe currently has 300 acres of trust land, plus a 139-acre parcel purchased from the state. The tribe's settlement act specifies at 700-acre reservation but the 139 acres is not considered part of the settlement.
