New Bush policy to count hatchery salmon as wild

The Bush administration will count salmon raised in hatcheries as wild, a move that could take some species off the Endangered Species Act list, The Washington Post reports. The National Marine Fisheries Service will announce the new policy in June. It was drafted in response to a court decision that questioned why the government excluded hatchery fish when it listed the coastal coho salmon under the Act. About two dozen species of salmon are currently considered endangered or threatened. The fish are located in rivers where tribes have treaty fishing rights. Get the Story:
