Anchorage fears loss of Alaska Native convention
Monday, March 15, 2004

Tourism officials in Anchorage are trying hard to prevent the Alaska Federation of Natives from moving its annual convention.

The meeting, held every October, draws 4,000 to 6,000 people to the city. It has an economic impact of $4.1 million.

AFN, however, is considering a move to Fairbanks in response to concerns that the city isn't welcoming for Natives. Fairbanks could see a $4.8 million to $5.2 million boost in its economy.
