New name sought for Indian center in Oklahoma City
Thursday, March 11, 2004

First it was called the Native American Cultural Center and Museum. Now it's just the American Indian Cultural Center.

But the Native American Cultural and Educational Authority doesn't think that's good enough. "There are already many cultural centers focusing on native people across the country," deputy director Gena Howard told The Oklahoman. "We don't want people to say, 'Which one is it? Oh, the one in Oklahoma City.'"

Howard said an informal study led to the "American Indian" name change. Now, something more catchier is needed, she said.
