Environmental groups sue to stop drilling in Alaska

Seven environmental groups filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management to stop drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The groups say BLM failed to consider the impact of drilling on migratory birds and other wildlife. They want to stop oil and gas leases on nearly 9 million acres of the reserve. Last month, Interior Secretary Gale Norton approved development. Some Alaska Native-owned lands would be open for drilling. Surface and sub-surface rights are up for grabs. Get the Story:
