WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2001 A vigil will be held this Saturday in Cortez, Colorado, for Fred Martinez Jr., a Navajo teen found beaten to death in June in what some say is a hate crime. Martinez, 16, endured criticism and taunts because he was gay and transgendered, said his mother. Pauline Mitchell criticizes school for not understanding her son and law enforcement for not being responsive to his death. Shaun Murphy, an 18-year-old New Mexico man, was arrested on suspicion of killing Martinez. Get the Story:
