MARCH 1, 2001 In an editorial today, The Seattle Times says its time for Uncle Sam to start writing "large checks" to the estimated 300,000 American Indians whose trust assets the federal government has failed to manage for more than 100 years. The paper says President George W. Bush should direct Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to reconcile and settle the trust accounts. The paper says "every dollar" of an estimated $10 billlion owed to the account holders should be paid with "contrition and humility" Get the Story:
