FEBRUARY 27, 2001 In an editorial today, The Denver Post says Secretary of Interior Gale Norton should take the lead on the trust fund lawsuit and show that the United States might actually live up to its promises to American Indians. The paper says Norton should use last Friday's court of appeals ruling which upholds the government's responsibility to fix the broken system as "political leverage" to make changes. Norton has said trust reform is a top priority but given more than 100 years of financial mismanagement, it may be hard pledge to fulfill. The paper also says the Treasury Department should use its "rainy day fund" to help settle the issue. Get the Story:
