FROM THE ARCHIVE
OCTOBER 9, 2000 Reverend Steve Boes of the St. Augustine Indian Mission on the Winnebago reservation in Nebraska, says its an incredible challenge to minister to the tribe's parish. He joined the parish three years ago, taking time to learn about Winnebago culture at the mission founded by the recently canonized Mother Katharine Drexel. He traveled with a group of Winnebago drummers and dancers to Italy and said they received the most response. One of his most memorable conversations was talking with then chairman Daryl LaPointe Sr. LaPointe told him how, as priest, he was both the cause and solution to problems. "I infect the children with white Western values, and I weaken their natural system of being a traditional Native American," Boes says in The Omaha World-Herald. Get the Story:
