FROM THE ARCHIVE
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2001 Blaine Edmo, chairman of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Idaho, has expressed "major disappointment" after finally learning his tribes are not the "host tribe" of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake, Utah. Edmo believed the Sho-Bans were the host tribe because the Native American 2002 Foundation told them so. But the Salt Lake Organizating Committee had told the foundation more than a year ago that the group had no right to make such a designation. Edmo said the Sho-Bans had put $15,000 into the effort and countless hours preparing for it. Upon learning of the SLOC's position, he decided to withdraw from the Olympics altogether to avoid "embarassment" for the Sho-Bans, he told The Salt Lake Tribune. Get the Story:
