GOP drops assault on Clinton rules

Republicans in the House have dropped plans to repeal or scale back dozens of regulations finalized in the last months of the Clinton administration due to changes in the political landscape.

The Democratic take-over of the Senate and the lack of a clear voting bloc among Republicans in the House has led GOP leaders to drop their assault, say lawmakers and strategists. House leaders had targeted a wide number of rules but have come to realize they don't have the political clout to overturn them.

Much of the charge was initiated by Resources Committee Chairman Jim Hansen (R-Utah). Among the rules he and other leaders targeted were limits placed on air tours over the Grand Canyon in Arizona and a ban on snowmobiles in national parks.

In some cases, there are lawsuits challenging the rules. In others, the Bush administration is reviewing them.
