TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2001 According to a report isssued by the US Office of Personnel Management last month, minorities and women employed by the federal government have experienced gains in entry level positions but see drop-offs in higher positions. When it comes to middle management positions, the number of women and minorities drops by almost half. The positions represent many of the crucial decisions made at federal agencies. Native Americans were 2.0 percent (29,524) of the government's work force. The Department of Health and Human Services, which includes the Indian Health Service, has the greatest numbers of Indian employees at 17.0 percent, followed by the Department of Interior at 11.9 percent.
