Senate panel debates judicial nominees

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday held a hearing not to debate President Bush's judiciary nominees but to consider how their ideological views should affect their confirmation.

Democrats and some legal scholars said questions about their views on abortion and other touchy areas should matter. Republicans and other legal scholars said it shouldn't.

Even if those questions aren't part of the debate, many Senators approve or disapprove of nominees based on those kinds of issues, argued some.
